Marketing Cloud and Data Cloud: Do We Really Know Our Customers?

Unified customer view connecting data clouds and marketing channels

Publication date: October 28, 2026

Sales says the customer is interested. Support remembers yesterday’s complaint. Finance knows they already paid. Marketing, doing its very best, has just sent an offer for a product they have owned for months. Every team has data. None seems to have the full story.

Sales knows the account. Service sees support tickets. Marketing tracks opens and clicks. Finance knows transactions. Put the teams together and sometimes they are not talking about the same person at all. The promise of a data platform is not storing everything. It is creating a shared and useful context.

Four teams, four versions of one customer

Salesforce Data Cloud and Marketing Cloud can connect signals that support segmentation, personalization, and orchestration. But technology cannot automatically repair incompatible business definitions, missing consent, or poor instrumentation. Available data is not necessarily trustworthy data.

Connecting platforms can be a technology project. Getting an organization to share definitions, events, and accountability is a less comfortable—but far more valuable—conversation.

A customer starts an application online, contacts support, and finishes at a branch. Without connected signals, marketing may send an abandonment campaign after completion. The system must recognize the actual outcome and update the next interaction quickly enough to matter.

Knowing someone means noticing what they already did

Beyond potential audience size, track profile freshness, identity coverage, suppression accuracy, attributable outcomes, and delayed events. How quickly does a meaningful customer action change the next experience?

The next time someone asks for a bigger audience, I would love to hear a different question in the room: how many awkward customer conversations could we avoid if we finally saw the same person?
